Microbric Electronic Connection Technology

Microbric is a solderless electronic construction system.

Microbric allows users to build complex customised electronic devices with little or no prior electronics knowledge. The system is completely solderless and the electronic connection system not only makes the necessary electrical connections, but also holds the assembly together in a robust manner.

Microbric's modular solderless technology is assembled by joining different modules called brics using screws and spacers to connect the different modules to the motherboard

All Microbric constructions use a motherboard containing a programmable microcontroller. Connected to the motherboard are peripheral modules. Peripheral modules have specific functions, and connect the motherboard with the outside world.

Technical information

Microbric is a system of interconnecting electronic modules, which enables the rapid development of customised electronic devices. At the core of the system is the ‘Microbric edge’ and connector 'bric'. A single Microbric edge consists of three conductors power, ground and data. A plastic bric is used to connect two Microbric edges side by side. Clamping screws and spacers are used to complete the electrical connection and to hold the assembly together.

Microbric's durable modules are connected to the mother board usinc scews. Each module has a specific function, such as switch modules, light modules etc. The modules, and robot can then be programed to perform specific tasks using th emodules.

Each module is made up of a number of Microbric units, each unit is 800mil x 800mil (20.3mm x 20.3mm). This leads to the standardisation of module sizes for example a 2 unit by 3 unit module measures 1600 mil x 2400 mil (40.6mm x 60.9mm).

Microbric uses a systems approach to constructing devices. Each module serves a different function, for example: microcontroller motherboards, communication modules, motor control modules, memory modules, sensor modules, display modules, power supply modules, human interface modules etc.

Microbric modules do not deteriorate with use and can be reused many times.The plastic brics are made from nylon and the same bric is used for both horizontal connection and vertical connection (stacking) of modules.The spacers are nickel-plated brass hex4 with a M2 thread. The double ended spacers increment in units of 2mm from 8mm to 14mm. The short spacers (nuts) are 3 mm in length and are only used for horizontally connecting modules where as the longer spacers are used for stacking modules.The modules are made from 2mm fibreglass PCB material, which is double sided with 'flash' gold plated pads and contacts. Both sides have red and black silk screening to help identify the positive and negative contact.
